TOILETS - ongoing

Public toilets are a defining feature of the urban landscape in Japan, especially in major cities. This series explores not only the architectural diversity of these spaces, but also the toilet as a place with multifunctional significance.

In Japanese society, where outer behavior (Tatemae) is often separated from inner feelings (Honne), the toilet becomes more than just a functional space, it takes on a new and deeper meaning. Behind closed doors, far from expectations and public observation, a space emerges where the true self can exist.

With this series, Wurtinger want to ask, where and when are we truly ourselves?
